Psalm 89:11-18
WALK IN THE LIGHT
Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD. Psalm 89:15, NIV
To “walk in the light of your presence” signifies abiding in God’s love, and thus keeping His instructions/commands daily; notwithstanding the human limited sense of judgment that may desire or even argue to the contrary. Positive attitude of perpetual obedience to divine instructions will certainly elicit divine pleasure, and thus result in joy and abundant blessings to the individual, family, or even a nation.
“Respect is reciprocal,” is a popular maxim. Everyone loves to be honoured and respected by their juniors and seniors alike. Thus, appropriate rewards, sometimes in the form of physical gifts in, words of approvals, or even promotion in ranks, are usually given. The same process goes for disrespectful or disobedient folks at home, or work, or communities where appropriate punishment is to be meted out. Today’s passage shows that a delight in obeying God’s instruction will certainly attract God’s attention: it will bring divine pleasure, which will be bestowed upon obedient and faithful children/nations. Make up your mind to walk in the light always.
Birthday Blessing: I will hope in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. Psalm 74:14

Jeremiah 50: 28-34
OUR REDEEMER IS STRONG
Yet their Redeemer is strong; the LORD Almighty is his name…. Jeremiah 50: 34, NIV
God is great, awesome in power, and incomparable in strength. The demonstration of God’s power is seen not only in providing for physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of His creatures, it is much more evident in the maintenance of law and order among the diverse occupants (humans, wild animals, sea creatures, and so on) of the world. To assert the supremacy of His power over the turbulent and arrogant nature of some of the created orders, God often settles quarrels by disciplining the guilty and absolving the innocent.
Today’s text states that God will always defend His people because they have been willingly chosen to obey His commands as their Creator. Most of their arrogant neighbours, (Gentile/uncircumcised nations) typified in today’s passage by the Babylonians, usually disobeyed the divine instructions with impunity, thinking that they will get away with it. Beloved, those who think they would get away with oppressing you have got God to contend with. They will soon regret while you will rejoice.
Birthday Blessing:  God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear... Psalm 46:1-2

Isaiah 54: 1-8

GOD IS DEEPLY COMPASSIONATE
“For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back…" says the LORD your Redeemer. Isaiah 54:7-8, NIV
In today’s passage, Prophet Isaiah clearly reveals to us the fact that God is forever loving and compassionate. He relates to all men in love. The text enumerates different categories of crises to which the people were subjected, ranging from barrenness to divorce, antagonism, and humiliation of various kinds and so on. Some might even have concluded that all hopes were already lost. Yet, God (through the prophet) assures of His willingness to bring about restoration that is far beyond human expectation.
Man is limited in knowledge and understanding, and easily interprets all painful experiences as punishment from God. While it is possible for people to suffer as a result of past wrong-doing, human suffering is not always the reason for crisis (cf. John 9:1-3). Even when God chooses to punish the guilty for sins committed, it is usually done in love than to inflict pain. While it is true that those who violate policies should be punished, at least for it to serve as deterrence for others, godly leaders should learn to treat each case on its own merit. In that wise, they will be emulating one of the divine attributes which is compassion.

Isaiah 48:12-19
GOD IS THE BEST TEACHER
"I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you….” Isaiah 48: 18, NIV
Teaching is considered to be one of the most effective methods of transferring knowledge and skills to the learner. Among the qualities of a good teacher is the ability to learn new things, as well as efficiency at passing it across to the learner(s) through the most appropriate methods. Amazingly, in spite of the principles and dynamics of teaching, there is still the problem of the falling standard of education. The reasons are simple: most teachers are deficient in grace. Again, some teachers are themselves struggling with some difficult issues of life, while majority does not understand the real needs and abilities of their learners.
Today’s passage clearly reveals God as the best teacher. In contrast to all human teachers, God has good content, and He uses the appropriate methods. He also has the infinite requisite knowledge about the abilities, backgrounds, as well as the inhibiting social factors that are faced by the individuals (the learners). Therefore, you will do well to submit to God’s instructions, because they are best for you. If you are a teacher, you need to learn the art of teaching from Him.

SIN KILLS
“For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt.… Whoever eats their eggs will die, and when one is broken, an adder is hatched.” Isaiah 59: 3-5, NIV
Imagine a world without punishment for sins; a world where sinners can dodge punishment, or have someone else punished for their sins. If such privilege is based on such condition as wealth, educational or social status, you can imagine how it would be! Praise be to God that a sinful man cannot escape divine punishment, no matter how hard he may try (cf. Ezekiel 18:20). God has put enough structures in place both to effect arrest, to convict guilty sinners, as well as to discharge the innocent who may be wrongfully accused.
In today’s passage, Isaiah assures about the fact that God is awesome, endearing and powerful. He is also righteous and just to give appropriate sanction to erring humankind (vv. 1-3). Though, that a man is sick or in crisis may not always be an indication that he/she is guilty of sin. However, the submission in the text should also encourage those being oppressed by human powers to know that God is impartial: He will be fair to all, no matter how hard it may seem at bending the hands of man for justice. Are you experiencing injustice? God will soon vindicate you.
Birthday Blessing:  Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Galatians 6:7

GOD DELIGHTS IN SHOWING CLEMENCY
… You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. Micah 7:18c, NIV
The God we serve is merciful. Israel was to come under God’s judgment due to her many sins as stated by prophet Micah. However, in the closing verses of the last chapter of the book of Micah, the Lord is revealed as showing clemency to His people.  Specifically, the Lord promised to shepherd His people and show them His wonders (Micah 7:14-15); punish the nations that have oppressed His people (Micah 7:16-17); pardon the sins and transgressions of His people and show them His mercy (verses 18, 20).
The fact is that all of us are alive today because of the mercy of God. Otherwise, many of us would have become history. This challenges us never to run away from God whenever we miss the mark. We have the assurance as written in the scripture that we have the Lord Jesus Christ as our advocate before the Father (1 John 2:1). Christ is always pleading on our behalf before God the Father. What are those sins that are making you to run away from God? You don’t need to run away from Him but run to Him. He will show you His great mercy today.

TROUBLING TIMES OF WOE
“…Now is the time of their confusion.” Micah 7:4, NIV
The scripture reveals that righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people (Proverbs 14:34). The worst thing that has ever happened in the history of man is sin. Troubles of different kinds began the moment sin came into the world. Till date, sin is the root cause of man’s trouble all over the world. Prophet Micah laments the woeful consequence of sin upon the disobedience. The passage catalogues the different problems associated with sin. These include: depression, bloodshed, evil zeal, corruption, bribery, conspiracy, treachery, dishonouring parents, betrayals and a host of others.
Our world is in trouble today due to sin. The only solution is to return to God in genuine repentance and total surrender of our lives to the Lord Jesus. That trouble you are going through at the moment could be as a result of your sins? It is better you confess and forsake them to experience God’s forgiveness and deliverance. Why not hand over your entire life to the Lord Jesus Christ for repair now! Any other time may be too late!

YOU ARE MY SHEEP
“You are my sheep, the sheep of my pasture…” declares the Sovereign LORD. Ezekiel 34:31, NIV
The benefits that go with being one of God’s sheep are numerous. Being a sheep of Christ is a rare privilege that no man should rebuff if given the opportunity. Amongst others, the Lord promises to do the following for His sheep: make a covenant of peace with them; rid their land of wild beasts; bless them; make them fruitful; set them free from their bondages; grant them security and provide for them (verses 25- 28).
The question is, are you one of God’s sheep? By the way you live, can people attest that you belong to the Lord? A major trait any sheep that belongs to the Lord should have is the ability to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd and follow His leadership. When last did you hear the voice of the Good Shepherd? Following the Lord would be very difficult, if not impossible, until you hear His voice. You can become one of God’s sheep today by repenting of your sins and accepting Christ into your life as Saviour and Lord.

MY SHEEP WERE SCATTERED
“My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill….” Ezekiel 34:6, NIV
The Lord is very jealous over His children. It is for this reason that He ensures that shepherds are provided for His people at every given time. Amongst others, shepherds are to care for God’s people, strengthen the weak, heal the sick and search for lost sheep. The shepherds in Prophet Ezekiel’s time were however not faithful in these assignments. Instead of caring for the sheep, they concentrated on caring for themselves. This was not overlooked by the Lord, the Great Shepherd. He therefore announced His judgment on the shepherds.
The shepherds of our days include spiritual leaders such as pastors, political leaders and everyone occupying a leadership position. Many of these leaders are not different from the shepherds of Ezekiel’s time. In like manner, they are very selfish and insensitive. Instead of caring for and feeding the sheep, they feed on the sheep. This explains the frustration of people around the world today. People are scattered spiritually, physically, emotionally and in every area of life. If you are responsible for God’s scattered sheep in your care, make amends today before God would bring His judgment upon you.

Psalm 13
I TRUST IN YOUR STEADFAST LOVE
But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. Psalm 13:5, NIV
Life is filled with all kinds of challenges and sometimes they could be frustrating. David, in this passage, went through a challenge of prolonged and serious illness that made him to wonder if the Lord had forgotten him. We also, sometimes, respond to life’s challenges like David did. In fact, because of challenges, some have stopped having their daily devotion, going to church; and have backslid completely. These are not proper responses to challenges of life. David subsequently resorted to praying instead of complaining. He resolved to trust in God’s steadfast love and sing of it.
How are you responding to the challenges confronting you currently? Are you complaining and grumbling against God? How long will you weep over that matter? One of our hymns says “weeping will not save me.” Hope you are not quietly angry at God and slowing down in your commitment to Him? Hope you are not considering the option of quitting the faith? Why not pray like David and trust in God’s steadfast love?

JUSTICE, KINDNESS AND HUMILITY
He has showed you, O man … to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8, NIV
The Lord is ever faithful and loving to His people. He has truly loved His own with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3). It is however sad that God’s people have not always been loyal to Him as He is to them. Our love for God is compared to the morning mist (Hosea 6:4). This should not be so. In today’s passage, the Lord accused Israel of not following His requirements. The Lord delivered them from Egypt, raised leaders for them and disallowed Balak and Balaam to harm them (verses 1-5) but Israel still lived against God’s requirements. Consequently, the Lord expressed His displeasure to them and required that they “act justly,” “love mercy” and “walk humbly with God” rather than offer Him sacrifices.
Brethren, our God is not difficult. His requirements are simple and clear. He expects us as we journey through our Christian pilgrimage to act justly (rightly), love mercy (kindness) and walk in humility. This is what will please the Lord and not our gift offerings. May the Lord help us to do these always.

YOU HAVE BLESSED MY ENEMIES
Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies, but you have done nothing but bless them!” Numbers 23:11, NIV
An interesting thing about this story is that while Balak and Balaam were making frantic and unrelenting efforts to harm Israel, God’s people were not aware of their evil plots. They were just living their normal lives. As long as there was no iniquity in their camp, the enemy could not succeed. The challenge is that we should live lives that are pleasing to God. A pure and holy life is a defence against the enemies’ attacks. A child of God that is living right will surely be safe from harm.
Therefore, in the name of the Lord Jesus, the name that is above all names, may every Balaam and Balak that is secretly plotting your destruction be eternally disappointed today and forever. May every curse they may have pronounced over your life be turned to blessing. May every altar they may have erected to harm you be defiled, overturned and destroyed by the blood of the lamb. SPEAK ONLY WHAT I TELL YOU
… “Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.” Numbers 22:35, NIV
It is obvious from our story today that Balaam’s spiritual antenna had a problem. Despite the various experiences and signs he had from the LORD, he could not discern that God was not in support of his going to consult for Balak. Even after confessing that he did not realize that it was the Lord that was opposing him when his donkey refused to move and even spoke in a human voice; Balaam still embarked on that trip (verse 34).
Meanwhile, that the Lord permitted Balaam to go with Balak’s men does not mean that He approved of his plan. Hence, the Lord commanded him to speak only what He would tell him. This further suggests that the enemy of your soul cannot say anything over your life and it would come to pass if the Lord has not allowed it. You must be at peace because that enemy does not have the final say over your matter. The Lord God is on your side. He will fight for you today and forever. DO ONLY WHAT I TELL YOU
That night God came to Balaam and said, “… go with them, but do only what I tell you.” Numbers 22:20, NIV
Evil people are ever ready to go to any length to harm the righteous. They are ready to pay any price just to achieve their agenda just as Balak did. Can you imagine a whole king stooping so low before a diviner! It may surprise you to know where some leaders go and what they do to secure and remain in power. It is disheartening to hear where some Christian leaders also go to in order to achieve their evil objectives.
Note that diviners and those who consult them are under God’s control. They can only go as far as He permits. The Lord therefore permitted Balaam to go with Balak’s men but with a divine order to do only what He tells him.  It doesn’t matter what the enemy is already doing around your life, family and business, rest assured that the Lord God is perfectly in control. The enemy can only go as far as the Lord permits. What the Lord does not command, He never permits to come to past (Lamentations 2:17). THE WORD THE LORD SPEAKS
“Spend the night here,” Balaam said to them, “and I will bring you back the answer the LORD gives me.” Numbers 22:8, NIV
The Israelites faced a lot of difficulties on their way to the Promised Land. The Lord was however there to give them victory at every stage. Because of this consistent victory, other nations were afraid of Israel. An example is the incident between Moab and Israel. Even when Israel had no intention of possessing any portion of the Moabite’s land, Balak was afraid that Israel was coming to dispossess and defeat her as she had done to other nations. Balak consequently hired a prominent diviner, Balaam, to curse the people of God.
The intention was to first defeat Israel spiritually before attacking her physically. In His supremacy, the Lord restrained Balaam from following the elders of Moab.   He could not do anything contrary to this instruction. It is important to note that the word the Lord speaks is important for our living. This should challenge us to daily spend time before the Lord in His word. This is a major key to success in every phase of life (Joshua 1:8).

WHO GIVES SPEECH TO MORTALS?
The LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth… Is it not I, the LORD.” Exodus 4:11, NIV
Many of the great people in the Bible and perhaps in contemporary times that have been mightily used of God often display initial reluctance to God’s call. They gave excuses as to why they could not do what the Lord was asking them to do. Moses (Exodus 4:10); Gideon (Judges 6:15); and Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:6-7) all gave excuses. This suggests that all our excuses for not wanting to do the will of God, as genuine as they may seem are not tenable before Him. God will always have the final say in our lives.
So if the Lord has, in His sovereignty, decided to use you, refrain from giving excuses. It is a great privilege that He chose you to serve Him. Never trivialize that opportunity. Accepting it would bring about your promotion while rejecting it may lead to your downfall. Is the Lord calling you to do something for Him? Stop giving excuses! Begin to do that which the Lord is leading you to do and you will forever be happy for doing God’s will.

WHAT DOES THE LORD REQUIRE?
And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you…. Deuteronomy 10:12, NIV
The Lord was not secretive about the requirements that Israel should follow if she indeed intend to walk with Him. Over and over, the Lord repeated these requirements to them. Shortly before his death, Moses charged Israel to greater commitment to the Lord. He made clear what the Lord required from them. These included: to fear the Lord, walk in His ways; love God, serve Him with all their hearts and souls (verses 12-13). In addition, they were to circumcise their hearts, love the aliens, hold fast to Him and take their oaths in God’s name.
The Lord has every right to make such demand from Israel. He is the Lord their God, the God of gods, the Lord of lords, defender of the fatherless and widows, lover of the aliens and miracle worker in Israel. A lot is required of every child of God even today. Keeping the Lord’s requirements would open doors to unimaginable blessings. Failure to adhere to these requirements also has serious consequences. The children of God everywhere must therefore trust God for grace to live to glorify Him on a daily basis.

While Micah remained true to his calling and proclaimed God’s message, the false prophets message were determined by the amount of favours they received. Micah prophesied that one day shame will come upon the false prophets for their actions.
Pastors today accept bribes and allow big contributors to control the church. If fear of losing money or members influences pastors to remain silent when they should speak up for what is right, their churches are in danger. Wealthy people in the church must never use their resources to influence or manipulate God’s ministers - that is bribery to dance to their tune. If this action of the rulers and the ruled continue, then surely the predicted doom would become a reality. We need the Spirit of God to embolden the true prophets so that they can make a change. Pray for His help now.
Birthday Blessing: Do not be afraid you will never suffer shame. Isaiah 54:4

Isaiah 45:5-13
WOE TO THOSE STRIVING WITH GOD
“Woe to him who quarrels with his maker….” Isaiah 45:9, NIV
Some children do insult and speak harshly to their parents. Those who refuse to repent among them often end up horribly. Whoever faults and criticizes God for his or her makeup is inviting God’s curse. At times, God conceals His treasure in man’s deficiency and deformity. It is in such that God reveals that He is God. This is a fundamental truth, which if believed would abolish idolatry out of this world. God also declares His sovereignty by affirming that nothing is or could be done without Him (v7): He created light, darkness, good times and bad times.
It is disastrous to quarrel with such an awesome and powerful God. Many people have caused themselves unnecessary pain due to their dissatisfaction with where God has placed them or how He created them. Whatever unpleasant situation you are going through, do not resent them, but ask God what He wants you to learn from such experience to make you a better child of His.

Matthew 7:15-20
KNOWN BY THEIR FRUITS
“…Every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.” Matthew 7:17, NIV
Note that Christ is talking about prophets, men who proclaim and teach the gospel in this text. Some of them are false prophets who proclaim and teach a false gospel and they are very much among us (verse 15). The chief trait of false prophets is that they “come to you in sheep’s clothing” (verse 13). This means that they are pretenders who appear as ministers in profession, behaviour, position and message (2 Corinthians 11:12-15), but actually they are working for their ego, fame, prestige, position, livelihood, career and comfort. They put on deceit by appearing harmless, innocent and good.
Another revealing mark of a false prophet is the fruit he gathers. He is known by the fruit he feeds on and produces such fruit in return. One’s “fruit” is not just what one does, but also what one says, which reveals one’s true identity. So, check out that ‘man of God’ before you get carried away by his spiritual gimmicks. May you not share in his punishment!
Birthday Blessing: …and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span. Exodus 21:26

Psalm 15
WALK BLAMELESSLY, DO RIGHT, SPEAK TRUTH
“…He who does these things will never be shaken.” Psalm 15:5, NIV
Today’s Psalm begins with a serious and weighty question: “Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill?” Following is a very plain and direct answer, and if you desire to be sincere with yourself you will find this passage a faithful guide and with the help of your conscience you will know whether you are a citizen of Zion or not.
To be blameless in the text does not mean perfection but one who possess integrity in his or her relationship with God and others. The righteous do what is right; there is an unswerving relationship between what they say and what they do. Again, when the righteous promise to do something, they remain true to it (Ecclesiastes 5:1-7; Matthew 5:33-37). Their honour is more important than their wallet. Are you such that also walk, do and speak the truth? If you will do this, your reward will be great.
Birthday Blessing: Do not be afraid or discourage because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. 2 Chronicles 20:15

ACT IN THE FEAR OF THE LORD
“…you must serve faithfully and whole heartedly in the fear of the Lord.” 2 Chronicles 19:9, NIV
Jehoshaphat was one of the four kings of Judah who were outstanding for godliness; others were Joash, Hezekiah and Josiah. He sensed the importance of religious education for the people and sent priests and Levites to teach the people the law of the Lord (2 Chronicles 17:7-9). Because of his godliness, “the fear of the Lord” fell on the surrounding nations. He also sent judges among the people to execute the laws and check the activities of evil doers.
The charge Jehoshaphat gave to the law enforcers is very helpful to leaders today. One, you must realize that you are working for God (verse 6), because good governance springs from commitment to God. Two, you must be impartial and honest (verse 7). Three, you must be faithful (verse 9). Four, you are to act only out of fear of God, not people (verse 9). As a leader in school or the society, remember that God holds you accountable for the authority you exercise. The world is in need of people who have the fear of God. Are you a likely candidate?
Birthday Blessing: Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9

FALSE PROPHECIES OF PEACE
“…lying prophets who claimed peace would come to Jerusalem when there was no peace….” Ezekiel 13:16, NLT
Prophecy is a gift from God enabling the recipient to foretell what is to come. For example, several prophecies were told in the Bible concerning Jesus Christ; nations; the last days; the end of the world and the second coming of Christ. The most essential element of a prophecy is that it must come from God, “For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21).
The prophets of Judah failed as ‘watchmen’ over the nation. They prophesied “peace” when judgment was imminent. Things are not different today. Many have been misled to believe the prophecies of peace and prosperity in the midst of a life of spiritual recklessness. These prophets do not emphasize obedience and righteous living which God says are crucial to peace and prosperity (Matthew 6:33). Do you too prophesy or believe lies? Better make a turn around to enjoy God’s peace.
Birthday Blessing: The LORD will fight for you; you need to keep your peace. Exodus 14:14

DO NOT PERVERT JUSTICE
“Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong….” Exodus 23:2, NIV
Today, we do many things that are inimical to the existence of good relationships. Gossip, slander and false witnessing can wreck families, strain neighbourhood cooperation and cause chaos in the judicial system. Unfortunately, that is what many people do and that is why God is warning us against following the crowd of evil doers. We suffer the unfortunate tendency of thinking that something is right simply because many people engage in it. History has however, proven that majority are not always right. Gossips, rumours and lies have today become part of the ‘system,’ but you should know that even if you do not initiate a lie, you may be responsible if you pass it along.
Justice demands impartiality and not compliance with the crowd. When called to testify or to adjudicate between people, do not pervert justice against anyone because he or she is your enemy. In carrying out judicial proceedings, we should be cautious because good laws are not enough unless they are duly administered.

Proverbs 11:1-10
THE RIGHTEOUS AND THE WICKED
The righteousness of the blameless makes a straight way for them, but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness. Proverbs 11:5, NIV
In very simple terms, to be righteous means to be morally good and just, while to be wicked is to be morally bad and evil. Today’s passage attempts to compare the righteous with the wicked. The righteous is honest in business (verse 1), which pleases the Lord, as we see in Leviticus 19:35-36 and Deuteronomy 25:13-16. Whatever the Lord abhors must be avoided for it brings ruin. Righteousness alone delivers from evil and death, not wealth (verse 4). A wealthy person who is not righteous is virtually nothing.
The righteous also stands to enjoy security and serenity; God’s safety from slander; and joy (verse 10) throughout their lives. The sins of the wicked will however catch up with them (verses 5-6) and the hope of the wicked will perish with them (verse 7). Brethren, we have seen a few righteous people in our country and many wicked people too. Consider their outcome and decide what you desire to be your own end as well.
Birthday Blessing: … Have faith in the LORD your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful. 2 Chronicles 20:20

Psalm 7:9-17
TEST MY MIND AND HEART
“O righteous God who searches minds and hearts, bring to an end the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure.” Psalm 7:9, NIV
These are the worst times globally and especially for our country. Human activities are crippled in a section of the country as a result of the violent activities of insurgents. The president had to declare a state of emergency in those regions and send troops to quell terrorist acts. While victims are still counting their human and material losses, unwise pundits are busy passing blame. Some blame bad leadership, corruption, poverty, lack of education and so on.
In today’s passage, we see two things that we must all desire and pray for in times like this. One is that all violence tendencies should be brought to an end in our lives. The reformation we must earnestly pursue, thus, is the reformation of our manners. Two, we must pray for enduring righteousness, so that the bad may become good, while the good become better. Do not be an instigator or promoter of violence in the family,
community and church. Surrender your negative passions to God so that He can heal you.
